What is Mailchimp?
Mailchimp is a popular email marketing platform that lets you create, send and automate newsletters. It is used by tens of thousands of companies worldwide to stay in touch with their customers. Whether you run an online shop or offer a service, Mailchimp helps you send emails and reach your target audience in a clear, organised way.
What makes Mailchimp attractive to many business owners is how easy it is to use. You can get started with newsletters relatively quickly thanks to the ready-made templates and a clear dashboard. For smaller companies or new business owners, it is an accessible solution, especially since there is a free plan for up to 500 contacts.
Mailchimp also offers basic functionality such as simple automations, forms and integrations with tools like WordPress and Shopify. However, if you want to build more advanced flows or fully personalise your email strategy, at some point you will run into Mailchimp's limitations.
What can you do with Mailchimp?
With Mailchimp, you can design, send and automate emails. You build newsletters in a drag-and-drop editor, use standard templates or start with a blank canvas. You can also segment audiences, create sign-up forms and set up simple automations, such as welcome emails or birthday messages.
Mailchimp also gives you insight into your campaigns. Think of open rates, click behaviour and unsubscribes. That way, you quickly see what works and what could be better. Mailchimp is particularly suited to business owners who want an easy start with email marketing and need a clear platform with the most important features.
Is Mailchimp suitable for large companies?
Mailchimp is an accessible tool that works very well for freelancers, start-ups and SMEs. It is a fine place to start, especially if you have a limited list and run a simple email strategy.
For larger companies or organisations working with complex customer journeys, multiple audiences or dynamic content, there are often better alternatives. Mailchimp does offer automation options, but they are less extensive than on platforms such as Klaviyo, Deployteq or Copernica. So when is Mailchimp still a good fit?
- Do you have <30,000 contacts and a relatively simple customer journey? Then Mailchimp may well be enough.
- Do you have a growing database, and do you want to personalise campaigns based on behaviour and use smart automations? Then it may be wise to look at a more advanced ESP.
Is Mailchimp always cheaper than other email service providers?
Mailchimp offers an accessible pricing model that is attractive to beginners. The free plan for up to 500 contacts is a nice way to get to know email marketing, and the paid plans are clearly structured too.
As your database grows or you want to use extra features, the costs do rise with it. That makes sense in itself, but it is good to take it into account in advance.
Can I build every marketing automation in Mailchimp?
Mailchimp offers a number of handy standard automations, such as welcome emails , abandoned basket reminders and birthday emails . You can also easily set up a series of emails based on behaviour or segments.
Do you want to build more advanced customer journeys, for example with multiple branches, extensive logic or conditional triggers? Then there are limitations. Mailchimp is strongest at the basics, but for truly complex flows a platform such as Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign is often more flexible.
And what about integrations? Through the Mailchimp API you can connect many systems, such as Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress and CRM tools. There are also many standard integrations, which makes it easy to connect Mailchimp to your online shop or website.

Mailchimp vs Klaviyo: which suits your business?
Mailchimp and Klaviyo are both popular email marketing tools, but they differ considerably in functionality and focus. Which one suits your business best depends mainly on your goals, technical requirements and type of organisation.
Mailchimp is ideal for companies that want an easy start with email marketing. The platform is clear, works well for newsletters and basic automations, and is easy to connect to widely used tools such as Shopify and WordPress.
Klaviyo, by contrast, focuses more on data-driven e-commerce. Think of extensive segmentation based on behaviour, real-time data from your online shop and far-reaching personalisation. For online shops with growth plans and advanced flows, Klaviyo therefore offers more depth.
Torn between the two? At mailmeisters, we work with both platforms every day and are happy to help you make the right choice.
Mailchimp integrations: Connect with other tools
Mailchimp works with hundreds of tools and platforms, so you can easily exchange data. Think of integrations with Shopify, WooCommerce, WordPress , but also with CRM systems, payment providers or sign-up forms on your website.
Do you use Shopify, for example? Then you can automatically show products in your emails or follow up on abandoned baskets. With a WordPress plugin, you can add a sign-up form to your website in no time.
For specific requirements or less common platforms, an extensive Mailchimp API is also available. With it, you can build custom integrations, for example to send data from your own system into your email flows
